Victorian Chess
It's a huge game of chess that's being played - all over the world.
- Alice in Through the Looking Glass, by Lewis Carroll, published in 1872.
In 1887 Victoria's Golden Jubilee was turned into a national celebration of her 50th year as Queen.
The Golden Jubilee set her free, in a sense. She toured English possessions (she even visited France) and her public appeal soared. The first Ladies' International Chess Tournament was held that year to help celebrate the Queen's Jubilee because of Victoria's known fondness of chess.
