    California Chess: Trio takes first in chess competition

    The Goleta Valley Junior High chess team recently took first place in the annual Santa Barbara Area Chess Tournament, followed closely by the second-place team from La Colina, which hosted the tournament. Members of the Goleta Valley team, pictured above, are J.R. Riggs, left, Dante Dorentes, center and Michael Reveles. Science teacher Kim Miller is the team’s faculty advisor.

    Top chess players from Carpinteria, La Cumbre, La Colina and Goleta Valley junior highs matched wits in an intense three-hour competition.
