Minnesota: Open chess tournament starts Saturday
The Green Bay Open Chess Tournament will mark its 28th year Saturday and July 18 at the Midway Hotel, Packer Drive at Holmgren Way, Ashwaubenon. Last year's tournament was the largest in Wisconsin, according to its sponsor, the Green Bay Chess Association. Among those playing this year is Stan Smetankin of Minnesota, rated No. 41 on the U.S. Chess Federation's overall list.
Pre-registration is encouraged by Wednesday with a fee of $28 for adults, $23 for age 18-under. There is an extra $9 fee after that date. The tournament is open to all USCF members with membership and registration available on site and a special reduced entry for first-time USCF members. Boards and sets will be provided; participants should bring chess clocks if they have them.
