The 4th Annual USCF Western States Single Grade Chess Championships will be held on April 16 - 18, 2004 at the Holiday Inn Select, located at 801 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield, California 93301.
We expect over 500 participants from Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

Hawthorne Elementary Royal Knights Domiate the K-1 and K-6 Sections!
The first annual St. Rose School Winter Chess Open was held Sunday, February 15, 2004 at St. Rose Catholic School. The five round United States Chess Federation chess tournament was sponsored by the St. Rose Catholic School Chess Club. Many thanks to Principal Jim Brescia for securing the sponsor for this tournament. Jim Brescia’s recognition of the benefits of Scholastic Chess and his support in promoting Scholastic Chess have been extremely helpful in assisting in the phenomenal growth of Scholastic Chess in San Luis Obispo County.
There were over 215 games of chess played by 87 participants from over 20 schools at the tournament, which consisted of kindergartners to twelfth graders. Over 100 parents, teachers, volunteers, siblings, coaches and others also attended. There were teams from San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Atascadero, Los Osos, Arroyo Grande, Visalia, Bakersfiled, Morro Bay, and Boulder Creek.
Trophies were awarded to the top ten finalists in each section. Hawthorne Elementary Royal Knights turned in an outstanding performance by capturing first place in the K-1 section. Hawthorne Elementary Royal Knights scored an incredible 13.5 points to totally dominate in the K-1 section. Hawthorne’s closest competitor in the K-1 section was Georgia Brown Elementary from Paso Robles, with a score of 10 points. San Benito Elementary, from Atascadero, grabbed third place with 4 points.
The K-1 champion was Kindergartner, Kobi Kelly from Georgia Brown Elementary in Paso Robles, led all competitors with a perfect 5 wins and no losses. Coming in a close second was Hawthorne Elementary Royal Knight, Haven Kardel, with a score of 3.5. Nikolai Camacho, from Georgia Brown Elementary in Paso Robles, took third place with a score of 3. Fourth place went to Christan Cabrales from Hawthorne. Brandon Vazquez captured fifth place also from Hawthorne. Sixth place was awared to Caleb Lindsay. Seventh place was awarded to Mason Hargrave. Eighth place went to Oliver Kibbe. Ninth place to Biba Kirschner and tenth place to her brother Willie Kirschner.
Georgia Brown Elementary Mighty Towers of Power narrowly beat out San Benito Elementary Bengal’s Bishops to take first place in the K-3 section. Both teams scored 12.5. The tie was broke using the USCF tiebreak system. Hawthorne Elementary Royal Knights trailed with a score of 7 points to place third.
The K-3 champion Zachariah Lindsay from San Benito Elementary in Atascadero, led all competitors with a score of 4.5. Coming in a close second was Georgia Brown student, Seth Kelly, with a score of 4. Mixellen Lopez, from Caesar Chavez Elementary in Bakersfield, took third place with a score of 4. Fourth place went to Ryan Springer Carter. David Ausman captured fifth place. Sixth place was awared to Donovan Fandrick. Seventh place was awarded to Delaney Cline. Eighth place went to Kevin Donahue. Ninth place to Chris Brebes and tenth place to her brother Spencer Kibbe.
In the K-6 section the Hawthorne Elementary Royal Knights, a top five Western States Championship winning team, turned in an outstanding performance by capturing first place in the K-6 section with an incredible 18.5 points to totally dominate the K-6 section. San Benito Elementary Bengal’s Bishops took second with a score of 16.5. Georgia Brown Mighty Towers of Power followed in third place.
The K-6 champion was sixth grader Manuel Albarran, from Hawthorne Elementary in San Luis Obispo, with a perfect score of 5 wins and no losses. In this very competitive section, Brandon Sung, from Visalia, captured second place with 4 points. Coming in third place was Nathan Nolan, from Hawthorne Elementary, with a score of 4. Ruben Sigala, also from Hawthorne, took fourth place with a score of 4. Luke Smidt from Los Ranchos Elementary, in San Luis Obispo took fifth place with a score of 4. The K-12 champion was Allan Sung, from Visalia, with a perfect score of 5. Shane Wilwand, from Morro Bay High School, took second place with a score of 4. Jerry L Branum III, from Paso Robles High School, took third place with a score of 4. Matthew Dvantzis, from Morro Bay High School, took fourth place with a score of 3. John Wulff, from Laguna Middle School, took fifth place with a score of 3. Ryan Forth, from Atascadero Junior High, took sixth place with a score of 3. Jason Dornish, from Morro Bay High School took sixth place. Jesse Smidt, from Laguna Middle School, took seventh place with a score of 3. Andrew Cornelis, from Paso Robles High School took ninth place with a score of 3. Michael Brush, also from Paso Robles High School secured ninth place with a score of 2.5. David B Coates, from Morro Bay High School took tenth place.
Greatest cumulative upset awards were given in each section. This award goes to the player with an established USCF rating who defeats a higher USCF rated player. In the K-1 section , Nikolai Camacho, from Georgia Brown Elementary, with a USCF rating of 100, defeated higher rated USCF players to capture this award with a cumulative upset score of 111. In the K-3 section John Hollander III with an established USCF rating of 159, defeated a higher rated USCF player to capture this award with a cumulative upset score of 197! In the K-6 section Conor Morman, with a USCF rating of 232, defeated higher rated USCF players to caputre this award with a cumulative upset score of 505! In the K-12 section Jerry Branum, with a USCF rating of 1056, defeated higher rated USCF players to capture this award with a cumulative upset score of 460!
Best unrated prizes went to the following students: K-1 Caleb Lindsay, K-3 Kevin Donahue, K-6 David Mack, K-12 Alexandra Brush.
