40th Capablanca Chess Tournament Opening in Cuba
Havana, May 5 (Prensa Latina) The 40th Jose Raul Capablanca in Memorial International Chess Tournament will open in Havana on Thursday night, amid great expectations for the presence of world ace Vassily Ivanchuck (Ukraine).
Grandmaster Ivanchuck, currently occupying the sixth position in the world ranking with a 2,739 point ELO, stands out in the Elite Group of the event Havana's Neptuno-Triton Tourist Complex will host from today on.
This is the first time the Ukrainian player attends a tournament in Cuba, and he is a credit to the event gathering outstanding players.
Grandmasters Lazaro Bruzon and Leinier Dominguez, the only two Cuban players whose ELO surpasses the 2600 points, and Neurys Delgado, Jesus Nogueiras and Walter Arencibia, will represent the host country.
The tournament, Category XV, will be divided in four groups, Elite, Premier I and II, and the Mixed Group composed of male and female players.
