Seven wins, one loss for Iran at world student chess challenge


TEHRAN, Aug. 29 (MNA) - Iran celebrated seven victories and conceded one loss on the first day of the 9th world student chess tournament in former Nigerian capital Lagos Monday.

In men's event, grand master Ehsan Qaem-Maqami and FIDE masters Seyyed Javad Alavi and Morteza Darban handed Iran three wins while FIDE master Peyman Mohajeri was beaten by his Taiwanese opponent.

In women's category, grand master Shadi Paridar, FIDE masters Shirin Navvabi and Mona Salman-Mahini, and international master Shayesteh Qaderpur from Iran checkmated their rivals.

The Swiss-style world competitions will run till Sept. 3.

Tragic news. OK, perhaps I exaggerate slightly. This is the last of my ham-fisted excursions into chess for the moment. After a year, we all need time to take stock - not least poor Nigel Short, who has had to put up with my inanities. I always had a worry that exposure to my brand of chess would undermine him. He has been training a young grandmaster recently, and said it was good for him - brushing up on his theory and being paid for it. "Doesn't working through games with me give you the same mental edge?" I asked. He began laughing uncontrollably.

Mangalore: Adith Jagadish Shines at CBSE Chess Meet at Chennai


Mangalore, Aug 29: Lourdes Central School and Sharada Vidyalaya of Mangalore made an impressive debut in Under 14 category in CBSE South Zone Chess Championship held in Modern Senior Secondary School, Nanganallur, Chennai from August 21 to 25.

In aggregate both the teams scored 16 points (out of 28) each in 7 rounds and were placed 9th and 11th respectively.Both the teams fell short by 1 points to finish within top 6 which would have enabled them to
take part in CBSE Nationals.

Adith Jagadish, 12-year-old chess prodigy from Derik's Chess School, leading the Lourdes team, scored unbeaten 6.5 points in top board. He was awarded individual 2nd prize for top board. First prize was bagged by Ajay Srikanth of Jawahar Vidyalaya Chennai.

In all 39 Under 14 teams and 31 Under 19 teams from the States of AP,TN, Kerala, Pondicheri and Karnataka had taken part in the event.

Lourdes team was comprised of Adith Jagadish(Captain), Nihal Manjunath, Anuj D'souza and Anvitha J (players); Preeatham Kumar(Team manager). Sharada Vidyalaya team was comprised of Prem Appachu, Anantharam RU, Avinash RU (Captain), Shivashankar Somayaji (players); Srinivas (Team Manager); both the teams were accompanied by renowned coach Prasanna Rao.
