Celebrities, Movies, and Chess 4


Marlon Brando (1924-2004) played chess in real life. He learned chess as a teenager and taught his friend, Wally Cox, how to play chess. In 1952, Brando played chess between scenes while filming Julius Caesar. In 1953, Brando played chess between scenes while filming The Wild One. In 1955, Brando visited Humphrey Bogart several times at Bogart’s house, and they played chess for hours. Brando liked to play chess with friends in the den of his Beverly Glen home in Los Angeles. In the 1962 movie, Mutiny on the Bounty, Fletcher Christian (Marlon Brando) sits in front of a chess set and board in his cabin, studying some position. In 1968, Brando played chess between scenes with actor Sam Gilman (1915-1985) while filming Burn. In 1980, Brando played chess between scenes with George C. Scott during the making of The Formula. In an interview with Playboy in December 1980, George C. Scott said that Brando was not that good of a player. In the 1989 movie, A Dry White Season, they lawyer Mr. McKenzie (Marlon Brando) studies a chess position on a chessboard on his desk. When Brando died, his chess sets were auctioned by Christie’s in Los Angeles.

Nigel Bruce (1895-1953), who was best known for his portrayal of Dr. Watson, played chess in real life. He was a member of the Hollywood Chess Group and the Herman Steiner Chess Club. In the 1940 movie, Susan and God, Hutchie (Nigel Bruce) plays chess with Amos (Sam Harris). In the 1943 movie, Sherlock Holmes Faces Death, Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) helps Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) solve a mystery by playing a living chess game from moves found in a family ritual.

Richard Burton (1925-1984) played chess in several movies. In the 1964 movie, Becket, Thomas-a-Becket (Richard Burton) plays chess with the French king (John Gielgud). In the 1969 movie, Anne of a Thousand Days, King Henry VIII (Richard Burton) plays chess with Anne (Genevieve Bujold). In the 1972 movie, Bluebeard, Baron Kurt von Sepper (Richard Burton) plays chess with Anne (Joey Heatherton). In the 1978 movie, The Wild Geese, Colonel Faukner (Richard Burton) watches a game of chess and says it is a mate in two.

Nicholas Cage (born in 1964) plays chess in real life and has played in the Internet Chess Club (ICC) and at chess.com. In 1999, Nicholas and his son, Weston, age 9, started taking chess lessons from National Master Robert Snyder in Los Angeles. In the 2011 movie, Seeking Justice, Will Gerard (Nicholas Cage) is a high school l English teacher and chess enthusiast who plays chess with Jimmy (Harold Perrineau).

Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) was a weak chess player in real life. Chaplin devoted two pages in his My Autobiography (1964) on chess and meeting the chess prodigy Sammy Reshevsky (then knows as Sammy Rzeschewski) in Los Angeles in 1921. A picture of Chaplin playing chess with Reshevsky and with Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., appeared in the January 1922 issue of the American Chess Bulletin. Chaplin offered Reshevsky a movie job, but Reshevsky’s advisors turned it down for religious reasons. In 1940, Chaplin directed and starred in The Great Dictator. He included a chess game in the movie where two players discuss politics during a game of chess.

Lee J. Cobb (1911-1976) played chess in real life. In the 1939 movie, Golden Boy, Mr. Bonaparte (Lee J. Cobb) plays chess with Mr. Carp (William Strauss). In the 1948 movie, The Dark Past, Dr. Andrew Collins (Lee J. Cobb) plays chess with Al Walker (William Holden).

Ted Danson (born in 1947), best known for his acting in Cheers, plays chess in real life and has played Woody Harrelson in the past Harrelson is the better player). In the 1980 TV film, Lethal Games, Jack Chenault (Ted Danson) plays chess with a computer. In the 2005 TV film, Knights of the South Bronx, Richard (Ted Danson) is a chess teacher and coach.

The Fonda family all played chess in real life and in film. In 1966, Henry Fonda attended the second Piatigorsky Cup chess tournament in Santa Monica. In the 1976 movie, Futureworld, Chuck Brown (Peter Fonda) played chess with Traly Ballard (Blythe Danner). In the 1978 file, The Greatest Battle, General Foster (Henry Fonda (1905-1982)) had a chessboard and chess position in front of him in one of the scenes. When she was 21, Jane Fonda played chess with Susan Strasberg on the beach in Malibu. It was during these chess games that Jane was encouraged to take acting lessons and become an actress. Jane Fonda encourages chess playing among children and teenagers at risk. Jane played chess with her ex-husband, Roger Vadim (1928-2000) in the 1960s.
