Chess making a move at festival
Along with the traditional activities, the sixth annual event is featuring a chess tournament.
With the Timmins Chess Club looking to grow interest in the game, playing at events such as the Miners Festival helps dispel myths regarding the game.
"I don't want people to think chess is only for the super-smart," said tournament organizer Bruce MacKinnon.
He explained that there are no age limitations to the game and that it teaches a number life lessons such as being resourceful and about long range planning.
Scheduled for Sept. 2, the tournament is going to take place from 1 p.m to 4 p.m.
Cost is $15 for Chess Club members and $20 for non-members. An extra $5 is added on for event day registrations. To register or for more information visit www.timminschessclub.com or call MacKinnon at 360-5074.
